The data center is undergoing a physical transformation. As artificial intelligence drives server and rack densities higher, the infrastructure supporting those systems is changing with it. Cooling is moving beyond traditional air-based designs toward direct-to-chip liquid cooling, while more of the associated infrastructure is being installed overhead.

Data Center Cooling Is Moving Up, and So Is the Hardware

Traditional data centers commonly use raised access floors as part of their cooling architecture. Computer room air handlers and air conditioners push conditioned air into the underfloor plenum, with perforated floor tiles delivering that air to server racks.

Newer, high-density facilities increasingly use slab-floor designs and liquid cooling. Rather than relying on the space beneath the floor to distribute cooling, portions of the mechanical and electrical infrastructure can be routed overhead.

“Cooling from above” can describe two different concepts. One is overhead air distribution, in which conditioned air is delivered from above. The other, increasingly important for AI data centers, is overhead service distribution. In this system, liquid-cooling infrastructure such as coolant piping, manifolds, and CDUs is suspended from the structural ceiling.

The distinction matters. The move overhead isn’t necessarily about making cooling inherently more efficient. Instead, it reflects the changing engineering requirements created by higher rack densities, heavier equipment, and the infrastructure needed to support liquid cooling.

From Raised Floors to Structural Ceilings

The raised-floor model remains viable, and data center designs vary according to application and economics. But slab-floor facilities can eliminate the underfloor air plenum and make room for a different approach to infrastructure distribution.

In a liquid-cooled AI data center, overhead systems may include:

  • Coolant manifolds and piping
  • Coolant distribution units
  • Busway and electrical infrastructure
  • Fiber and data cabling
  • Mechanical utilities
  • Seismic bracing and support systems

That means the structural ceiling increasingly becomes an important infrastructure platform. The reason is straightforward: AI racks are getting exceptionally dense.

AI Rack Density Is Changing the Engineering Equation

Uptime Institute’s 2025 survey puts average data center rack density at roughly 7.6 kW. AI infrastructure is operating at an entirely different scale.

NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 systems have been cited at roughly 120 kW and approximately 1.36 metric tons per rack. Newer systems are pushing even further. Schneider Electric estimates GB300 NVL72 configurations at approximately 132-142 kW, while TrendForce has projected VR200 NVL72 configurations at roughly 225 kW per rack. Future NVIDIA Rubin Ultra/Kyber systems are expected to push rack power requirements toward approximately 600 kW.

At those densities, traditional air cooling becomes increasingly difficult to deploy effectively. Direct-to-chip liquid cooling provides a way to manage substantially higher heat loads, but it also introduces additional piping, manifolds, CDUs, and support infrastructure. In other words, the floor is no longer necessarily the primary infrastructure platform. Increasingly, the ceiling matters too.

Why This Creates Demand for Structural Fasteners

Overhead infrastructure requires a supporting system engineered for the weight, configuration, and environmental requirements of the facility. That can mean threaded rod, strut and channel, anchors, seismic bracing, cantilever hardware, structural bolts, structural nuts, and other connection components.

This doesn’t mean every structural fastener used in a traditional data center is simply replaced by another fastener in a new design. Rather, overhead service distribution can create additional structural connection points throughout a large data center hall.

These aren’t necessarily low-value commodity purchases.
